What is a tip-up garage door?
Tip-up garage doors consists of one large panel. These doors are available in several designs but generally operate with side mounted lifting arms(hinges) with tension springs attached on either side of the door. The solid panel opens to a position, half-in and half-out of the garage door opening.
Tip-up doors are an older design of doors and are very rarely installed these days due to the high cost and difficulty of repairs/maintenance.
Advantages of Tip-up doors:
- Suited for low headroom installations (space between lintel and roof)
- Easily operated manually (without automation)
- Traditional styled door, suitable for most residential applications.
Disadvantages of tip-up doors
- The swing up/outward arc of the door means a vehicle must stop several feet in front of the door to avoid being hit by garage door when opened.
- In open position, panel lies below the lintel, taking away opening hight
- +- 2 cm gap per side between panel and wall when closed.
- Tip-up doors are heavier than sectional doors causing additional strain on automation.
- Not as secure as a sectional overhead garage door.
